Quathiaski Cove - Campbell River

John and Amy joined us in Port Hardy. We made it to Port Neville on Tuesday night and tied up to the dock. We visited until late in the evening with friends some new friends from Prince Rupert. They had brought their sail boat up from California. We went through the Seymor narrows and into Quathiaski Cove.  While we where looking for a spot to anchor a home owner in the cove motioned us over and offered us his dock to tie up to. We took the ferry over to Campbell River and did some grocery shopping, and walked the marine. The weather is nice, but with all the fires in this area the sky is really hazy. Having a great time, headed south through Dodd Narrows tomorrow and on to Butchart Gardens to meet Katelyn and her friend Callum on Saturday.

Eagle at Port Hardy watching the fishermen clean their daily catch

Port Hardy

Port Hardy is a sleepy little fishing town at the northern end of Van. Island. We are tied up at Quarterdeck Marina waiting for the Hills to join us. The weather is foggy and their float plane has been delayed. We are looking forward to their arrival. We hiked yesterday and stretched our legs. They have a wonderful hiking trail that runs along the river. We plan to head south today and anchor at Port Neville, weather permitting. REALLY tiered of the gloomy weather, but still enjoying the boat and being on the water. We just have to find some nicer weather.

Safety Cove Whales

Safety Cove

We left Shearwater Marina on saturday with beautiful weather. The sky was blue and a soft breeze at our bow, until we reached Fitzhugh Sound. We could see the fog bank in the distance and when we hit it, yuck, just like pea soup. We switched on the radar and listened to the radio as the BC Ferries powered ahead a 16 knots dodging the small boats that dotted the channel. We stayed well out of there way. The fog lifted a few hours later. We found 2 humpback whales playing in the entrance to Safety cove on the west side of the channel. We floated along side them for about an hour and watched them spout, wave their tails at us ad bump into one another. They gave us quit a show. We decided to turn into the cove to anchor for the night and of course out of range for a picture they both breached beautifully. I guess we need to be more patient. Safety Cove was a good choice of anchorage, until nine little fishing boats decided to come in and anchor within 60' of us. We picked up anchor and moved. I guess we where in their spot. We woke again to fog and are on our way to Port Hardy.
