Ensenada to Turtle Bay

Our cruise from Ensenada to Turtle Bay was very eventful. We cruised 280nm and it took us about 30 hours. As we approached Cedros Island around 4am our engine alarm sounded getting everyones attention! The water pump on the main engine stopped pumping cool sea water into the engine. The shaft that connects the gears to the water pump stripped preventing water flow through the engine. Bill hooked the sea ray wash down pump up to a garden hose and we limped into Turtle Bay. We where so happy to anchor up and arrive safely. We where never really in any danger. The wing engine worked great and was our back up until Bob and Bill decided what to do. It was just a bit tense for a while until we where sure that there was no real damage done to the John Deere. We shut the engine down as soon as we could and the coolant protected the engine from becoming to hot. The temperature gauge was reading 181 degrees when  the  alarm sounded. We have had a temp sensor on the exhaust to monitor the temperature. The sensor was reading 99 to 109 as we traveled farther south and the water temperature in the ocean increased. We are so fortunate to have Bob Senter on Thor! He calms us all when the sea gods frown on us, and he bakes very tastey oatmeal raisin cookies too!
